People Powered Movement Photo Contest

Online voting is now open for the Alliance for Biking & Walking's inaugural People Powered Movement Photo Contest.

Your vote can help determine the lucky grand-prize winner of a 10-day all-expense-paid VBT bike tour of Tuscany and a year's supply of CLIF BARs as well as the two runners-up who will win brand new commuter bikes. Voters will also have the chance to help choose the seven category winners who will be receiving Rickshaw messenger bags filled with goodies and the priceless opportunity of having their winning photo published in the 2010 March/April issue of Momentum Magazine. Public voting runs throughout December 31st and will narrow down the submissions to the top 10 photos in each category. A panel of expert judges will select the final winners.

The over 2,000 photos submitted to the seven contest categories are benefiting the Alliance for Biking & Walking's new Online Photo Library, a valuable resource that will provide free high quality images for grassroots bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organizations. Help support grassroots advocacy by spreading the word and vote now here.

Judging Criteria

Photos will be judged based upon the following criteria:
Note: Photos do not have to meet all of the criteria below.

  1. Useful to biking and walking advocacy: Does the photo show positive images of biking and walking that connect with a general audience? Can this photo be used by biking and walking advocates to convey their message? (a still photo of a bicycle alone or a «sexy» photo of a girl biking may be great photos, but might not be that useful for advocacy purposed)
  2. Shows the people and faces of biking and walking: We want photos with people in them. We're looking for photos that show the smiling faces of biking and walking.
  3. Represents the «everyday» cyclist or walker: (e.g. people walking to work, friends biking in the park, a family crossing the street). We are not very interested in photos showing bike racing and photos exclusively showing people biking in spandex.
  4. Shows Diversity: We are looking for photos that show the diversity of people that bike and walk. We are looking for diversity of age and ethnicity. We also include pictures showing people with disabilities and geographic diversity (urban and rural settings).
  5. Has aesthetic quality: Does the photo have a good composition? Are images in focus? Is the photo illustrative (i.e. does it tell a story)?
  6. Are generic/universal images: Does the photo appear to be from Anytown? We are looking for photos that could be used by individuals and organizations throughout North America, that have no major distinguishing landmarks or individuals (eg. a photo of a family safely crossing the street via a crosswalk – the crosswalk could be from any town/city; a photo taken from the back of a crowd, where the individuals are anonymous).
  7. Are creative! While we are looking for classic shots, close ups of faces, etc., we are also interested in unique and rare subject matters. Does the photo have a creative perspectives/angles (eg. photos taken from behind or from the side, as opposed to straight-on)? Is their blank space/room for text or ads, such as for a magazine cover or organization pamphlet?
  8. Adherence to category guidelines: Does the photo fit well into one of the 7 categories of this contest? See the category descriptions above.
