Brewery Support Boosts Grassroots Bicycle AdvocacyPosted: 04/30/2010
New Belgium’s pledge of $40,000 over the next two years will allow the Alliance to offer strategic planning facilitation and guidance to at least six organizations in addition to providing direct organization support and coaching in key states. “New Belgium has been a long-time supporter of the Alliance and champion of bicycling and the environment,” says Jeff Miller, President/CEO of the Alliance. “With New Belgium’s assistance, we will help some key grassroots advocacy organizations become more focused, effective, and strategic.” Four organizations have been selected, through a competitive application process, to work with the Alliance to develop strategic plans in 2010. The Alliance will guide Bicycle Alliance of Washington, Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition, East Bay Bicycle Coalition, and San Diego Bicycle Coalition through a Whole Systems Strategic Planning Summit, engaging their stakeholders and developing a mutually shared vision and action plan to propel their organization’s forward. The service, valued at $5,000, is being offered at no cost, thanks to New Belgium’s generous support. The Alliance’s strategic planning consultation helps grassroots advocacy organizations clarify their mission, goals, strategic opportunities, and key collaborations. The process also allows the staff and board to focus on how to be most effective. According to Christine Culver, executive director of the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition, “We have come to a place in our growth where we need to reevaluate and redefine goals. A strategic planning process, with the support of professionals, will allow us to determine our strengths and weaknesses and create a strong strategic plan so we can continue to excel in bicycle advocacy and provide effective services in Sonoma County.” New Belgium’s support will also allow the Alliance to work directly with startup and struggling organizations in key states to help them grow their capacity. Through one-on-one coaching, resources, and other support, the Alliance will help strengthen these organizations so that they can win victories for biking and walking in their communities. About the Alliance: Alliance for Biking & Walking is the North American coalition of over 160 grassroots biking and walking advocacy organizations. The Alliance works to strengthen state and local organizations through research, sharing best practices, training, resources, and grants. About New Belgium: New Belgium Brewing Company’s Grants Program began in 1995 when it was established that for every barrel of beer produced, $1 would be given to non-profit organizations in the communities where they sell beers. The program aims to cultivate relationships and support organizations that improve the health of the natural environment and inspire others to joyously embrace sustainable choices. To date, New Belgium has donated $3.5 million. In 2010, they will donate $580,000 to programs in 26 states. For more about the New Belgium visit www.newbelgium.com ### |
