Tandem to the Prom
While many high school seniors dream of arriving at the senior prom in a Humvee super-extended limo, Max Shalitmontagne (my son) and Fiona Collum headed off to the Garfield HS Senior Prom (Seattle) on a tandem bike. They rode approximately 8 miles to the prom, so this was not just for effect, but real-world transportation. Max is 100% car-free. He rides about 200 miles per week commuting and riding for fun. He’s into alleycats, and other bike events like Emerald City Sprints (roller racing), STP, & Chilly Hilly. He teaches bike safety classes at Cascade Bicycle Club. He is a League of American Bicyclists certified instructor and a really good mechanic. This very tandem bike is available for rental at Aaron’s Bike Repair in West Seattle. Aaron’s is a full-service bike shop known for having the best mechanics in the business. Aaron’s promotes sustainable living and bike commuting for everyone, unlike some shops that cater to Lance wannabes. Many people believe you need special spandex clothing to ride a bike nowadays. Aaron says this is just not true, exemplified here by Max & Fiona. In fact, most of the millions of people around the world who use a bicycle as their primary transportation, wear their regular clothing.
